The $2.83-billion Broadway Subway Project has shifted into its final infrastructure phase, with crews now laying permanent rails and conducting initial train tests along completed tunnel sections. According to the BC Ministry of Transportation's latest photographic updates released in June and July, the first SkyTrain cars—specifically units 013 and 014—arrived on the new rails in April and are currently being used to test track segments. While the system will eventually operate as a driverless SkyTrain, current tests are running with operators in control. The ministry confirmed the extension remains on track for a late fall 2027 opening, approximately 15 months away, with stations along the corridor still actively under construction and escalators being lowered into place by crane.
This 5.7-kilometre extension will connect the existing Millennium Line from VCC-Clark to Arbutus Street, adding six new stations through Mount Pleasant, South Granville, and Kitsilano. For Vancouver's real estate market, this represents the most significant transit infrastructure upgrade to the Broadway Corridor in decades, transforming a major arterial bus route into a rapid transit spine. The construction has already reshaped street-level commercial activity along Broadway, with road rebuilding now underway after months of exposed excavation. Once operational, the line will replace the 99 B-Line—currently the busiest bus corridor in North America—and connect the corridor to the regional SkyTrain network, fundamentally altering commute patterns for the surrounding neighbourhoods.
