Vancouver Must Keep Short-Term Rental Addresses Private, B.C. Adjudicator Rules
Share

The British Columbia's Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner has ruled that the City of Vancouver is required to refuse to disclose the addresses of short-term rental operators. This ruling is based on the premise that revealing these addresses would expose operators to potential harassment and financial harm.

This decision stems from a freedom of information request made by Rohana Rezel in 2019, who sought to obtain business license and address information for Airbnb operations. The adjudicator noted that while business license numbers are publicly available, disclosing addresses could lead to harassment and reputational damage for operators.

As a seasoned real estate agent in Greater Vancouver, I see this ruling as a double-edged sword. While it protects the privacy of operators, it also complicates the landscape for those looking to invest in short-term rentals. Buyers and investors should be aware of the regulatory environment and potential challenges in obtaining information.
