Vancouver Mansion Owners Sue Neighbours Over Hedge Removal
Share

The owners of a waterfront mansion on Point Grey Road, Israel and Elaine Shafran, are seeking damages after their neighbours allegedly cut down portions of their privacy hedge in June 2025. The Shafrans claim that the removal of 11 feet of their 12-foot-tall cedar trees has significantly impacted their property value and privacy.

The Shafrans purchased their home in 2023 for $24 million, drawn by the property's 150 mature cedar trees that provided both aesthetic appeal and privacy. Following the hedge removal, they argue that their property is now exposed to surrounding homes, diminishing their enjoyment and value.

As a seasoned real estate agent in Greater Vancouver, I see the implications of this case extending beyond just the Shafrans. It underscores the importance of privacy in high-end properties and the potential for disputes that can arise from seemingly minor alterations. Buyers should be aware of the surrounding properties and their owners to avoid similar situations.
