Surrey to Propose Even Lower Development Cost Charges to Boost Housing Supply
Share

On May 13, 2026, the Surrey City Council approved an updated development cost charge bylaw aimed at reducing residential rates. The proposed changes include a simplified fee structure designed to enhance housing delivery and accommodate future growth in the city.

Mayor Brenda Locke emphasized the need for affordable housing, stating, 'If we want people to be able to live and buy a home in Surrey, we need to make housing more affordable to build.' The proposed DCC rates would decrease residential charges by approximately 7-9% from 2024 levels, making them competitive with other municipalities.

As a seasoned real estate agent in Greater Vancouver, I see these changes as a positive step towards addressing the housing crisis in Surrey. The reduction in DCCs not only encourages development but also signals to buyers that the city is committed to making housing more accessible.
