Metro Vancouver Apartment Dwellers Lag in Recycling Efforts Compared to Single-Family Residents
Share

According to a recent report from the Metro Vancouver Regional District, residents living in single-family homes recycle and compost at rates of approximately 60 to 65 percent, while those in multi-family dwellings, such as apartments, only manage a recycling rate of 30 to 35 percent. This significant disparity highlights the challenges faced by apartment dwellers in managing their waste effectively.

The report, published on May 19, 2026, indicates that the barriers to recycling for apartment residents include limited access to recycling facilities and a lack of municipal collection services tailored for multi-family homes. Belinda Li, a volunteer with Zero Waste B.C., emphasized that the complex logistics of recycling in apartment buildings deter many residents from participating.

As a seasoned real estate agent in Greater Vancouver, I see the implications of these recycling challenges on property values and community appeal. Properties with strong sustainability practices are increasingly attractive to buyers. Enhancing recycling efforts in multi-family homes could not only benefit the environment but also improve the desirability of these properties.
