Industry Groups Support Vancouver's Proposal to Amend Natural Gas Restrictions

Business and industry groups are rallying behind Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim’s proposal to amend the City of Vancouver’s natural gas restrictions. The BC Coalition for Affordable Dependable Energy (BC CADE) has endorsed a motion that seeks to review the City’s housing and energy requirement policies, particularly a bylaw enacted in January 2026 that restricts the replacement of natural gas hot water systems.

The bylaw's restrictions are set to take effect on January 1, 2027, and the coalition argues that these changes would help alleviate affordability pressures in Metro Vancouver. Bill Tieleman, director of BC CADE, emphasized that allowing the use of natural gas systems could save homeowners and strata buildings significant costs over time.

As a seasoned real estate agent in Greater Vancouver, I see the potential positive impact of these proposed changes on the housing market. By reducing operational costs and providing more options for homeowners, we could see a stabilization in housing prices, making it easier for buyers to enter the market.
